Photography - Words of Wisdom

Life Cycle -Lake Garda 2003 John Maffin

At Media Fizz, photography is not simply our profession.  It is also our passion.  Every image we record is another step on a never-ending journey of knowledge and experience.  Here are some words of wisdom from those who travelled this path before us and whose words have helped light up the way.

“Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution.”             - Ansel Adams

"So now almost everyone owns a camera. Yet, of all the commonplace tools available to us, the SLR camera is probably the least understood and certainly the most under-exploited. All too frequently the average amateur will purchase a fine modern camera and proceed to use it for making the most elementary simple snapshots. This surely is like playing 'Chopsticks' on a concert grand piano"   Sam Haskins

"A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective"   Irving Penn

" A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words"   Ansell Adams

"I think photographs should be provocative and not tell you what you already know. It takes no great powers or magic to reproduce somebody's face in a photograph. The magic is in seeing people in new ways." Duane Michals

"Chance is always there. We all use it. The difference is a poor photographer meets chance one out of a hundred times and a good photographer meets chance all the time" Brassai

“A good photograph is knowing where to stand.” - Ansel Adams

"If you're photographing in color you show the color of their clothes - if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul." ~Author Unknown

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it, Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth and you will know the key to photography.”  - George Eastman.

"The difference in 'seeing' between the eye and the lens should make it obvious that a photographer who merely points his camera at an appealing subject and expects to get an appealing picture in return, may be headed for a disappointment." - Andreas Feininger

"The essential things in life are seen, not with the eyes but with the heart." - St. Exupery.

Dear Lord, grant me the grace of wonder. Surprise me, amaze me, awe me in every crevice of your universe. Each day enrapture me with your marvelous things without number. ..... I do not ask to see the reason for it all: I ask only to share the wonder of it all. - Rabbi Joshua Abraham Heschel

"The camera can push the new medium to its limits – and beyond. It is there – in the “beyond” – that the imaginative photographer will compete with the imaginative painter. Painting must return to the natural world from time to time for renewal of the artistic vision. The key sector of renewal of vision today is the new vistas revealed by science. Here photography, which is not only art but science also, stands on the firmest ground." - Andreas Feininger.

"The most important thing... is not clicking the shutter... it is clicking with the subject." ~ Alfred Eisenstaedt

“The photographer has almost as much control over his subject matter as a painter. He can control light and shade, form and space, pattern and texture, motion and mood, everything except composition." - Andreas Feininger

"Every time someone tells me how sharp my photos are, I assume that it isn't a very interesting photograph.  If it were, they would have more to say." ~Author Unknown

"Buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer.  It makes you a Nikon owner."  ~Author Unknown

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the Palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
William Blake, "Auguries of Innocence"
