The Issues
There are various styles of wedding photography - a spectrum of approaches. It is also said that there are various types of wedding photographer! It is open to anyone with a camera to call him or herself a photographer - but beware! There are pitfalls both with well-meaning amateurs and over-priced professionals - so you need to choose wisely.
When the hired cars have gone, the food has been eaten and the band stops playing, your wedding day pictures should provide you with continuing pleasure - for a lifetime. So it is important to think carefully, not only in selecting the photographer, but also in allocating a reasonable budget and selecting the right style of photography to suit your taste.
What Style of Photography?
Purely Traditional wedding photography is essentially a series of carefully posed and highly orchestrated shots of bride, groom, family and friends. It represents an attempt to get the best possible technical shots - but often appears rigid, clichéd and to some - boring! In pursuit of excellence and order, this style can also intrude on your time schedule. However, some "traditional" pictures of the key moments are still popular. A skilled photographer will avoid 'frozen' poses and ensure the subjects are allowed to be themselves. Some 'relaxed' traditional shots are included in contemporary albums.
Reportage photography involves a significantly less structured approach and essentially comprises a series of many informal shots - 'fly on the wall' style. There is a danger that inexperienced photographers will deliver a batch of disappointing 'snaps' that are little more than snatched glimpses into events. However, a skilled reportage photographer will produce thoughtful images that add a flowing and detailed record of your wedding.
Contemporary photography is a mixture of traditional and reportage styles. Skillfully executed, it combines the best of both approaches. Not only will your album contain a treasured record of the key events, it will contain images and sequences that will enable you to re-live the romance, atmosphere, elegance and 'occasion' of your very special day.
How Much Photography?
Photographic coverage of weddings varies tremendously upon the couple's wishes and available budget. We routinely take around 500 to 700 pictures - but the final package may vary from 36 to 200 images in the album. Our coverage of the civil ceremony or church wedding forms the central framework of the photography - but superb photographs can be taken from home and at the reception. Evening celebrations are always a source of great pictures as everyone relaxes.
In addition to your main album we can provide a wide range of extras - including additional albums, gift boxes with some or all of the pictures taken on the day, photographs printed on canvas, framed enlargements, multi-frames or CDs - all at discounted prices.
What Type of Album?
Although some photographers offer a limited selection, the choice of albums is extensive. Prices vary according to size quality and number of pages. Our main wedding page gives detailed information on the various types on offer.
How Much to Pay?
Clearly, the bride and groom must work to their realistic budget. Photographers would perhaps respectfully wish to point out that their contribution is the most enduring and labour intensive of all the wedding services. The fruits of their toil are a collection of images that can give great pleasure for a lifetime - in albums and frames. For family and friends, who on that one special day are gathered together for what is a momentous occasion, those images help the unique moments live on - long after the band stops playing.
There are three main elements in the price charged by photographers -
